CALL FOR PAPERS: EXTENDED DEADLINE

International Journal of Surrealism 2.1 (Fall 2024):
The Manifesto!

Co-Editors:
Alyce Mahon (University of Cambridge)
Kate Conley (William & Mary)

The International Journal of Surrealism is the new journal of the International Society for the Study of Surrealism (founded 2018), launched 2022. The journal is published by the University of Minnesota Press.

The editors invite submissions for articles on the topic of “The Manifesto”

In tribute to the one-hundredth anniversary of the landmark publication of the Manifesto of Surrealism (1924), the document that opened Surrealism’s door to any and all who read it and advocated a new “freedom of thought,” the IJS invites essays on the theme of the manifesto for its Fall 2024 edition.

From the historical surrealist manifestoes penned by André Breton between 1924 and 1941, Louis Aragon’s manifesto-like Wave of Dreams (1924) and Robert Desnos’s “Third Manifesto” (1930), to the global translations or publications of statements and manifestoes by Czech, Caribbean, Chicago, or Asian surrealist groups, or the more recent D. Scot Miller’s “Afrosurreal Manifesto” (2013), we ask contributors to reflect on the work of the manifesto as a piece of writing, manual, agitprop, and collective vehicle for surrealist action, art, and performativity as well as the legacies of manifesto remonstrations today. How did the surrealist manifesto evolve over time and across borders and how best should we understand the ambition of each manifesto aesthetically? How might we reflect on the manifesto as incendiary form, foundational document, or art work in its own right? How is manifesto text translated into work and image? One hundred years after its publication, has the first manifesto of Surrealism stood the test of time as a passport for a new way of thinking, creating, and imagining?
