ISSS Virtual Event – Prismatic Fringes: Periodicals and the Borders of Surrealism (February 04, 2024).

Sunday, February 04, 2024, 6.30pm to 8pm UK time (Please check your own time zone).

You are warmly welcome to join in a discussion of a special issue of Dada/Surrealism guest edited by Andrea Gremels and Erin McClenathan, published in Spring 2023: “Prismatic Fringes: Periodicals and the Borders of Surrealism”. This publication results from a collaboration that started in 2018 when Gremels and McClenathan organized a panel on surrealist periodicals at the 1st ISSS conference at Bucknell University.

Register for the event here.

The idea for a special issue dedicated to surrealist periodicals took shape through continued discussions during the 2nd ISSS conference at the University of Exeter in 2019. In the framework of the virtual event, contributors to the special issue have been invited to share brief summaries of their projects and updates on new developments in their research. This includes Caterina Caputo, Claire Howard, Effie Rentzou, Tim Shipe, Lauren Walden, Emily Wieder along with Donna Roberts as discussant.

The conversation will include the role of periodicals in the study of international surrealism by arranging a conversation according to the four sections outlined in the issue’s introduction: (1) Intermedia and Reception, (2) Missions and Group Formations, (3) Cross-Cultural and Transnational Networks, (4) Transhistorical Perspectives and Entanglements. This event hopes to serve as a way to reflect and continue to extend collaborations among contributors, other members of the ISSS, and beyond.
